LEARN THE ABCDEF'S OF MELANOMA!!! EARLY DETECTION IS THE KEY!

  • ASYMMETRY: Does half of the mole look different from the other half?
  • BORDER: Is the border of the mole irregular or ill defined?
  • COLOR: Is the color uneven or has it changed over time?
  • DIAMETER: Is the mole larger than a pencil eraser?
  • ELEVATION: Has the surface of the mole changed? If it was smooth and flat before, is it now elevated ?
  • FEELING: Has the sensation around the mole changed? Does it itch? Is it painful?
  • PLEASE DO A SKIN EXAM EVERY MONTH AND WATCH FOR THESE SIGNS.

What does Melanoma look like?

So often Marcus gets asked about how his journey began.  Most people are shocked when we tell them this all started with a mole he was born with.  I am attaching some pics from prior to his first biopsy at the dermatologist-click on the pic and zoom in to get a better view (I have inserted a big arrow pointing to the mole), and 2 after that biopsy, but before his wide excision at MD Anderson that removed the margin around the mole and rebuilt his thumb with a skin graft from his side.  Maybe this will give some folks a little better idea about how it looked....crazy to think that Melanoma can start as a simple mole, then travel to lymph nodes and now lungs...amazing.....we have to be aware and teach others how to do skin exams.  We don't want to see anyone else have to go through this.  Prevention and early detection are the keys.  Please spread the word.
